SAARP believes that senior citizens are entitled to a secure and rewarding existence in line with the highest moral principles of mankind. We work with vigour to enrich lives, raise self-esteem and influence society to support these ideals.
The establishment of the Old Gold Employment Bureau was initiated and launched by SAARP in the March 2008 Bulletin.
This is an on-going process in which SAARP maintains a database of records with details of people's areas of expertise and qualifications, the area in which they reside and what type of employment they would like to obtain. This database is forwarded to a number of employment agencies throughout the country in order to try to facilitate the placement of a retiree in suitable employment or to assist such a person in obtaining a contract which will allow them to be gainfully employed and maintain the dignity of their lifestyle without having to burden Social Services. Currently we have over 500 registrations with expertise ranging from a nuclear technologist to a karate expert and from accountants to engineers.
Additionally one should bear in mind that the senior citizens community in any country probably has the greatest reservoir of expertise and ability imaginable. SAARP believes that disqualification for employment because of age is a discriminatory act and is basically illegal.
People are living longer due to their lifestyles and also due to increasing medical expertise. The result is that time erodes the value of earlier income provisions made for retirement. Many retirees now need additional income to sustain a meaningful lifestyle.
SACSO (South African Confederation of Seniors Organisations) also has various ongoing actions aimed at attempting to alleviate the situation.
